The IoT (Internet of Things) area has recently come to the fore. IoT includes various smart devices that make our daily lives easier. Manufacturers are therefore trying to offer the best possible solution. One such came the Chinese company Xiaomi, which introduced a complete IoT platform called Xiaomi Vela.
The goal of Xiaomi Vela is to unify the fragmented segment of IoT
The novelty was presented on November 5, 2020 at the MIDC 2020 conference in China. The main goal of the platform is to group all devices under one platform, as the IoT market is currently highly fragmented and inconsistent. All technologies should be nicely under one roof.
The company plans to work with the developers of other platforms so that these devices are also integrated under one roof and so that everything works smoothly.
Xiaomi's director of the IoT platform, Fan Dian, said the word Vela is a sailboat in Latin. The new platform is therefore supposed to be a kind of sailboat that will unite all IoT devices.
In the future, there will be support for wearable accessories and smart home devices
The plans are really big. Xiaomi Vela should grow by support for smart watches, fitness bracelets, smart speakers, cameras and other smart home devices and sensors.
How does Xiaomi Vela work and what is it?
It is an IoT software platform based on an open source operating system called NuttX and consists of three parts:
- Bottom layer - NuttX core
- Developer tools
- Top layer - Vela application framework
The NuttX kernel performs basic task scheduling, communication between platforms, works with the file system and basic functions of the operating system. It includes the necessary drivers, TCP / IP stacks, power management components, and more.
The Vela application framework has two layers. The top layer varies depending on the IoT platform. The lower layer contains system services, including the user interface and local storage.
Comprehensive platform
Xiaomi Vela is a platform capable of running on various chip platforms on which IoT devices are built. It can unify hardware, software and communication protocols. The result should be the support of as many devices as possible, which is what the IoT system is all about.
