Package without charger
Redmi The Note 13 Pro+ 5G was delivered to us by the SPS courier in the standard packaging we are used to with smartphones from Chinese sellers. The box of the smartphone came wrapped in air protection and a silicone cover.
At first glance, the packaging is completely ordinary. On top is a paper envelope with a needle for opening the SIM slot, paper documentation and a protective case. Underneath it is the smartphone itself in a transparent protective film.
However, at the bottom of the box we only find the charging cable without the charger, even though there is space for the adapter. We expected the versions without the charger to be more affordable, but the current prices at the time of writing the review are more advantageous for the packs with the charger.
Design and quality of workmanship
Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G can be purchased in three colors. In addition to the standard black, we also have a choice of white and perhaps the most interesting purple, the so-called Aurora Purple.
Target with this color Redmi clearly for the younger generation and will probably appeal more to the female gender. It is a special color version where the Chinese manufacturer combines three colors around the rear camera module. These are prominent and large, protruding from the back cover. Compared to last year Redmi Note 12 Pro+ is a significant change, for the better for us.
As for the build quality, since this is a mid-range smartphone, don't expect any premium materials. The smartphone is made of plastic, but despite this, it has a very high-quality, even premium impression. At first glance, we would not at all say that it is a smartphone with a price tag only slightly exceeding 300 EUR.
Dizajn sa v tomto právní vydaril. Redmi it has gone from the boring plain design of last year's series to a fresh, modern and attractive style. It's a shame that the manufacturer includes a matte black protective case with a large cutout for such an interesting design, which does not fit it at all.
Comfortable grip and standard arrangement of elements
Mark Redmi has decided not to follow the trend of sharp edges, but on the contrary, it keeps the rounded edges, thanks to which the smartphone is very comfortable to hold in the hand. However, this is not a small compact model. It has dimensions of 161.4 x 74.2 x 8.9 mm and weighs 204.5 g.
If we look at the layout of individual elements, there is no significant change here compared to the usual standard. The bottom edge is home to the USB-C charging port, SIM card slot, microphone and speaker. The opposite, upper edge contains the second speaker, microphone and sensors.
The left side is traditionally empty, while on the right side we find only the volume control buttons and the button for turning off / on or lighting up the screen.
A breakthrough model in several ways
Redmi The Note 13 Pro+ 5G is described as groundbreaking in many ways, as it comes with several innovations that we were not used to in smartphones of this category and brand. The first novelty is an AMOLED display with rounded edges on the sides, which is a first Redmi smartphone with such a display.
A rounded display is usually a privilege of more expensive models, but this is no longer the case. Despite the fact that rounded displays have their detractors due to unwanted reflections or touches, we like such a display and it definitely gives the smartphone a more premium look.
In this case, it is a 6.67″ AMOLED display with a 1.5K resolution of 2712 x 1220 px. It has a high refresh rate of 120 Hz, which can dynamically adapt to current needs. You will also be pleased with the extremely high maximum brightness, up to 1800 nits or 100 percent coverage of the DCI-P3 color profile.
The display is protected by the latest protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, has 16 brightness levels and supports technologies such as HDR000+ and Dolby Vision.
Zaoblené hrany počet nie sú idinou novinkou. Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G is also the first smartphone of the brand to have a fingerprint reader in the display. It works very well and reliably.
Despite the AMOLED display, we only have a 10-second always-on display from the factory. Toto svečenie početne už vieme obísť, tak ako sme uveľa aj v recenzii na POCO X6 Pro 5G. Just go to developer settings and turn off MIUI optimization there.
This change also brings certain disadvantages. The visibility of the digits in the percentage status battery symbol will be reduced, as the numbers are displayed in the same color as their background. However, this can be circumvented by switching the display of the percentage status next to the battery symbol in the settings, instead of inside it.
The second, also cosmetic, problem is the angular icons of some system applications, while the other application icons are rounded.
With a processor from MediaTek
Recently, more and more Chinese brands are reaching for processors from MediaTek. Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G is also one of them and it got MediaTek Dimensity 7200-Ultra. It is an 8-core processor from September 2023, which is manufactured using 4 nm technology.
It consists of two Cortex-A715 cores with a frequency of 2800 Mhz and six Cortex-A510 cores with a clock frequency of 2000 Mhz. Compared to the competitor, POCO According to the benchmarks, the X6 Pro 5G is significantly weaker, but it is completely trouble-free in normal use. There is enough power and the processor is adequate for the class of smartphone to which it belongs Redmi Note 13+ Pro 5G belongs.
As for memories, our tested Redmi it uses 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It's not quite the latest and fastest memory, but in this case it's definitely not outdated either. Read and write speeds are still high. We also have the option of increasing the RAM memory by another 6 GB from the internal storage, which brings us up to 18 GB of RAM memory.
The 12 / 512 GB memory version is the highest. We can also purchase a lower memory version, namely 8 / 256 GB.
Efficient cooling was also thought of, where the smartphone has an area of 4 mm available2 for the cooler itself, the so-called Vapor Chamber and up to 11 mm2 passive graphite material in the smartphone, which also dissipates heat.
Up to 200 MPx main camera. A marketing ploy?
Redmi The Note 13 Pro+ 5G boasts a main camera with a resolution of up to 200 Mpx. Whether this camera is as good as its megapixel count, we will look at that in this chapter. But let's start with the known specifications of all cameras:
Main 200 Mpx | 1/1.4" Samsung ISOCELL HP3 sensor | aperture f / 1.65 | OIS + EIS |
---|---|---|---|
Ultra-wide-angle 8 Mpx |
1/2.8" Sony IMX355 sensor | aperture f / 2.2 | - |
Macro 2 Mpx |
1/5" sensor Omnivision OV02B10 | aperture f / 2.4 | - |
Note: information about specific sensor models is not from the official Xiaomi site
The dominant camera is clearly the main one with 200 Mpx resolution, which also has optical image stabilization and provides 4x optical, lossless zoom during photography. His photos are mostly sharp and full of details, but we have to admit that he has better marketing than results.
The high resolution of up to 200 Mpx is somewhat unnecessary and is more of a marketing lure for the average consumer who is tempted by the high number of megapixels. In good lighting conditions during the day, you can take beautiful photos with it, but the problem arises in worse lighting conditions.
Even with a cloudy sky, we can often observe strange colors that have a kind of purple tinge, sometimes green. It is similar with artificial lighting in the interior. White balance is clearly a problem for this smartphone. To compare the color performance, we present photos from all three cameras:
Ultra-wide-angle camera, zoom and macro
New photographic equipment Redmi The Note 13 Pro+ 5G also has an ultra-wide-angle camera, but it has much fewer megapixels, namely 8. At first glance, the wide-angle shots are darker, have a worse dynamic range, weaker sharpness, and overall it is understandably a worse camera.
As for the color presentation, in this case it is cooler and the photos have a higher contrast. Despite this, you can take nice shots with it, but mostly in good lighting conditions, during a sunny afternoon or in a well-lit interior.
Redmi reports that the new smartphone from the Note 13 series can offer up to 4x optical zoom without losing quality. However, we don't have a full-fledged telescopic camera here, but the smartphone zooms in using a cutout from the 200 Mpx main camera.
Double-zoomed photos are quite nice, they have similar characteristics to those we take without zooming and offer enough details. However, with a 4x zoom, we would no longer say that it is a lossless zoom.
The photos already have a different color rendering, are visibly less sharp and therefore less detailed. Let's not forget to mention the macro camera, which, however, is completely unnecessary, since we can take better pictures if we cut out a zoomed-in part from the photo taken with the main camera. The macro has only 2 Mpx, fixed focus, so it is quite difficult to take pictures with it. In addition, the output is very weak.
Night photos
The main camera takes the best night photos, which is no surprise. Night photos from the main 200 Mpx camera are quite sharp and we also like its color rendering. It's the same with double zoom.
We were not so pleased with the ultra-wide-angle camera. It often takes visibly blurry shots, even in fairly good street lighting. The 4x zoom is almost unusable after dark. Here, the sharpness is already very weak and the photos look like they were taken from a cheap mobile phone from a few years ago. This is definitely not a lossless approximation.
Video in 4K
The maximum video recording resolution is 4K at 30 fps. This resolution is also stabilized, but not very well. In the video, you can see a lot of shakes or small blurs, which are probably caused by stabilization. We also have a choice of 1080p at 30 or 60 fps, and also 720p at 30 fps. In the settings, we can also turn on better stabilization, which will, however, reduce the resolution to 1080p/30 fps.
You can watch a short preview of the 4K video on our YouTube:
Battery and charging
Redmi The Note 13 Pro+ 5G has a standard 5000mAh battery, but it supports up to 120W charging. Since there has been no progress in the field of batteries for a long time, at least fast charging will please. Although the smartphone does not charge beyond the manufacturer's recommended 19 minutes, it is still extremely fast charging.
You can see the entire charging process from 20% to 100% in the table below:
capacity | time |
---|---|
20 - 50% | 6 minutes and 10 seconds |
75% | 12 minutes and 33 seconds |
90% | 17 minutes and 35 seconds |
100% | 24 minutes and 30 seconds |
As for the duration of a single charge, following the standard battery, do not expect any surprises. The smartphone lasts one day by default, depending on its use.
Still with MIUI 14 and Android 13
At a time when smartphones from Xiaomi are already receiving updates to the latest Android 14 along with the new HyperOS system, recently introduced Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G still only comes with Android 13 and MIUI 14. The Chinese giant explains this step by saying that at the time HyperOS was being developed, this system was not yet tuned enough for them to use it.
Since this is a novelty, we would at least expect the manufacturer to hurry up with the update to HyperOS and bring it shortly after the launch of the series smartphones Redmi Note 13 for sale. Unfortunately, that didn't happen and we haven't received an update yet.
Unfortunately, we do not perceive MIUI 14 in this smartphone entirely positively. The system is cluttered with a lot of different applications, games and links to download other games. There is even a kind of own App Mall, which serves to download various applications. Since most of us install apps through the official Google Play Store, we see another app store as unnecessary. Unable to uninstall.
There are also annoying ads that come as notifications from Mi Browser or various suggestions with tips, for example about themes. Fortunately, we can easily disable these push notifications in the application settings.
On the other hand, we have no reservations regarding the functionality of the MIUI system. Apart from unnecessary bloatware and unwanted notifications, we are happy with the environment. It offers plenty of settings, has a modern design and works smoothly.
Sound and connectivity
Redmi The Note 13 Pro+ 5G has a pair of speakers, but they are not particularly high-quality. On the contrary, they are rather average and do not expect any musical experience from them.
Wireless connectivity includes NFC for mobile payments, Bluetooth this time in version 5.3 or WiFi with version 6. The smartphone supports 5G networks and eSIM. Instead of one of the two SIM cards, you can activate an electronic SIM card with your operator.
Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G: Final evaluation
Redmi The Note 13 Pro+ 5G is one of the most anticipated mid-range smartphones. Compared to last year's model, it brings a significant improvement in design, which this time is extremely successful, fresh and modern. In addition to the design changes, we also have a couple of very interesting novelties. For the first time in the history of the brand Redmi a rounded AMOLED display and a fingerprint sensor in the display were used.
Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G got a more premium look, but despite several innovations, it did not bring the latest operating system, Xiaomi HyperOS. Again, we only have Android 13 and MIUI 14, and the update to HyperOS is not yet available.
The smartphone has sufficient performance, smooth operation, fast memories, eSIM support, IP68 certification, 120 W charging and an attractive price tag. However, it also has minor flaws that mainly concern the cameras. The main camera sometimes has problems with white balance and, despite the 200 Mpx resolution, does not perform exceptionally well. The ultra-wide-angle camera has only 8 Mpx and the manufacturer could forgive the unnecessary 2 Mpx macro.
What's the beat redmi I can buy?
