Standard packaging
The Xiaomi 14 is sold in the classic packaging we are used to with smartphones. So we will not focus on it in particular. Here you will find a smartphone protected by foil, a protective black case, a charging adapter, a cable, paper documentation and a needle for opening the SIM slot.
Despite the fact that it is a flagship model, the packaging is completely ordinary. On the other hand, it contains everything that is customary.
Beautiful design and high quality workmanship
We had the opportunity to test the latest smartphone from the Xiaomi workshop in an elegant white color. At first glance, it looks luxurious thanks to the thin, 1.61 mm frame around the display. A black or green version is also available. The manufacturer has chosen sharp edges and shiny materials for this model, as well as for the Xiaomi 13.
However, the back cover is gently rounded around the entire perimeter, so even the sharp edges do not cause any discomfort when holding. Xiaomi 14 maintains compact dimensions of 152.8 x 71.5 x 8.20 mm and a weight below the 200 g mark, namely 193 g. The smartphone is comfortable to hold in the hand, its operation is convenient even with one hand. We definitely appreciate smaller sizes, which is rather a rarity these days.
The novelty has a metal frame, but a glossy plastic back cover. As for the layout of individual control elements, there has been a minor change. The bottom edge traditionally has a slot for SIM cards, a microphone, a speaker and a charging USB-C port.
The volume controls are located on the right side, along with the button to light up the display. The left side and this time the top are completely empty. The microphone and sensors from the top edge have been moved to the rear camera module.
CrystalRes AMOLED display
The new model from the flagship series has a 6.36″ AMOLED display with the attribute CrystalRes and the designation C8. The manufacturer will please all supporters of flat displays, as the Xiaomi 14 does not have rounded edges.
The display has a 1.5K resolution of 2670 x 1200 px with a resolution of 460 ppi. The refresh rate is 120 Hz and there is also LTPO technology for automatic brightness adjustment according to current conditions.
Recently, individual models have been outdoing each other in terms of maximum brightness, which is extremely high even in this case. Its maximum peak value can reach up to 3000 nits.
Xiaomi also paid attention to color accuracy, so the display is calibrated according to the CIE 2015 standard. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support is also a matter of course.
A high-quality display is an important part of a flagship model. Subjectively, we have to admit that the display is great not only according to the specifications. Even an ordinary layman will definitely notice the quality of this display. It has high brightness, excellent resolution and beautiful colors.
New Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and fast memories
The great equipment is also complemented by the new processor from Qualcomm, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It is produced with 4 nm technology and consists of one Cortex-X4 core with a frequency of 3300 MHz, 3 Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 3150 MHz, 2 Cortex-A720 cores with 2960 MHz and 2 Cortex-A520 cores with a frequency of 2270 MHz.
The new architecture should bring a significant improvement over Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which we had the opportunity to see, for example, in the Xiaomi 13 Pro model. Xiaomi reports an improvement in the performance of the processor by up to 32% or the performance of the Adreno graphics chip by 34%. At the same time, CPU consumption is reduced by 34% and GPU consumption by 38%. These numbers are quite bold, so we are very curious if they will affect the battery life in particular.
Fast LPDDR5X type RAM and UFS 4.0 storage are also a matter of course. We had the opportunity to test the 12 + 256 GB memory version, but 12 + 512 GB is also available. Since we have fast storage here, we can increase the RAM memory by another 3 GB using the internal memory. This brings us to 15 GB of RAM.
We also installed the popular AnTuTu benchmark in the Xiaomi 14, in which we scored just under 2 million points, namely 1. In the overall smartphone table of March 913, it ranked 009nd ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S 2024 Ultra.
The new Xiaomi 14 is without a doubt one of the most powerful smartphones that can handle even demanding tasks and games. Cooling is taken care of by the so-called IceLoop system, which should be 3 times more effective than classic cooling. More detailed details are not available. Subjectively, in our opinion, the cooling is not that great and the smartphone heats up during more demanding operations. On the other hand, it is questionable whether it is even possible to cool such performance in a small body more effectively.
Cooperation with Leica continues
In its fourteenth series, Xiaomi continues to cooperate with the German company Leica. The new smartphone is equipped with Leica Summilux optics and a main camera with a low aperture and excellent dynamic range.
You can see the detailed specifications in the table below:

According to the parameters, we have a lot to look forward to, so let's take a look at each camera separately.
Leica Summilux main camera
Let's start with the main 50 Mpx camera with a 1/1.31″ Light Fusion 900 sensor. This sensor is completely new, as it was developed just for Xiaomi. As Xiaomi continues its collaboration with Leica, right when the camera app is initially launched we have a choice between two color profiles: Leica Authentic and Leica Vibrant.
We have already written about Leica color profiles in other reviews, so we will not spend much time on the differences. Leica Vibrant offers vivid and bright colors, while Leica Authentic tries to orientate colors to the most natural and realistic tones possible.
For comparison, you can find a pair of identical scenes with both profiles above. Leica Vibrant offers really vivid and colorful colors, while in the latter case the colors are duller, but often also kind of dark and dull. For this reason, we decided to take the rest of the photos in Vibrant mode.
The photos from the main 50 Mpx camera are really excellent and honestly we have to admit that this camera has done well. Photos are full of details, clean, sharp with excellent dynamic range. Whether we shoot in sunny weather, in the morning, in the afternoon or on cloudy days, the photos are almost always great.
The only problem we noticed was during lunch in the strong sun, when the camera didn't always do the best. Sometimes we found an iridescent reflection on the photos, in some cases the whole photo was too bright, bathed in sunlight that the camera could not suppress. These were mainly cases when the sun was shining from the side. Such a result did not pleasantly surprise us.
Even with interiors or weaker light on cloudy days, the camera copes well. Perhaps the biggest difference between the Authentic and Vibrant modes can be seen in the photos from such days.
Photos from Leica Authentic mode are kind of bland, sometimes too dark with dull colors. On the other hand, the Leica Vibrant pushes the colors to overly saturated and contrasting hues, making them significantly more distant from reality. We would welcome something between these two regimes, a kind of middle ground.
The ultra-wide-angle camera is also excellent
It is the ultra-wide-angle camera that often lags behind the main one, and it is basically the same in this case, except for one difference. It does not fall behind significantly, so its quality is still very good and you can take beautiful photos with it without any problems.
If we open the photos from the main and ultra-wide-angle cameras side by side, we see a slightly lower contrast in the wide-angle image, as well as slightly cooler color tones. The dynamic range is also slightly weaker, which can be seen especially in shadows and objects directly lit by the sun. Shadowy areas are slightly darker than with the main camera, and directly lit areas are sometimes too bright.
However, the overall impression is still very good and we are also very satisfied with the ultra-wide-angle camera.
Telescopic camera
Xiaomi 14 offers 2x and 3.2x zoom in the camera app. The application creates a 2x zoom using the main camera, with the help of a cutout from a 50 Mpx photo.
The telescopic camera takes care of a higher, 3.2x optical zoom without losing quality. And what is its result? Absolutely excellent. The output photos are beautifully sharp, full of details with an excellent dynamic range. Thanks to the high resolution of 50 Mpx, we can easily zoom in on these images additionally on a smartphone or computer without any significant loss of quality.
There is also macro support with automatic focusing from a minimum distance of 10 cm. As with standard shots, macro photos are also excellent. Thanks to the automatic focus, they take pictures comfortably and the result is excellent. We personally enjoyed taking photos with a macro and telescopic camera in general.
Night photos
As a matter of course, higher models already have an automatic night mode, so we don't have to manually switch to this mode via the camera application. However, the peculiarity is that we do not find a double zoom in the mentioned night mode, but we also have this option available for standard shooting with automatic mode.
If we look at the differences between Authentic and Vibrant modes, they are mostly not significant. In the Leica Vibrant mode, the colors are slightly warmer and more expressive, but in many cases we hardly noticed the difference.
However, there are visible differences between individual cameras. In particular, the ultra-wide-angle lens has a significantly different color rendering, as well as slightly weaker sharpness. Its color tones are closer to yellow, sometimes even green.
In general, photos taken after dark are good. The main camera has the best output, and the telescopic one is also very interesting, but sometimes it pulls the colors too much into very warm shades. Unfortunately, we also have to admit that the main camera sometimes doesn't do the best with stronger lighting or lights from banners, especially if they're coming from the side.
Video in multiple resolutions
Xiaomi 14 offers up to 8K video, but only at a frame rate of 24 fps and without image stabilization, which is not a win. That's why we prefer 4K resolution, where we also have 60 fps with image stabilization. We also find 4K with 30 or 24 fps, 1080p with 30 or 60 fps and 720p with 30 fps.
The smartphone also offers more advanced image stabilization, but after turning it on, the resolution automatically switches to 1080p / 30 fps mode, which is a great pity. We would appreciate at least 60 fps when the resolution is reduced to Full HD.
The camera app also offers other interesting video-related features. For example, there is a mode called Film, which automatically changes the aspect ratio and allows you to adjust the aperture or filter. The Director mode is more advanced, in which there are many different adjustments such as exposure correction, ISO setting, shutter speed, white balance or sound settings or filters, which are also in Film mode.
Xiaomi allows you to use the director mode by connecting several phones and tablets to a kind of director's set as cameras or monitors. The condition is that all devices are connected to the same WiFi network.
Let's say a few more words about video in night mode. Unfortunately, this is relatively weak, as you can see the work of stabilization too much in it, which causes blurring. However, the better quality of the selfie camera and its video recording will finally please. It can record up to 4K/60 fps.
Excellent sound and connectivity
As we mentioned in the introduction, the top edge of the Xiaomi 14 smartphone is completely empty. The sensors and microphone, which are usually located here, have been moved to the back side in the camera module.
Since the second speaker has also disappeared from the top edge, Xiaomi uses a speaker that is active even during a call and is located in the frame above the display. Here, by the way, it is well hidden and almost invisible.
The new model from the flagship series has up to four microphones with active noise cancellation. What about the speakers? They play literally brilliantly. There is support for Dolby Atmos surround sound, great bass and excellent balanced sound worthy of a flagship model. We dare to say that the Xiaomi 14 clearly belongs to the smartphones with the best sound output.
As for connectivity, WiFi version 7, NFC, Bluetooth 5.4 and eSIM support will please.
Battery charging
Xiaomi 14 received the so-called silicon battery with a capacity of 4610 mAh. The BMS system of Xiaomi Surge G1 takes care of the long life of the battery. There is also fast, this time 90 W charging, the progress of which you can see in the table below:
capacity | time |
---|---|
20 - 50% | 6 minutes and 58 seconds |
75% | 17 minutes and 47 seconds |
90% | 26 minutes and 25 seconds |
100% | 34 minutes and 20 seconds |
The novelty also supports wireless 50 W charging and reverse wireless charging. However, the wireless charger is of course not included in the package.
Xiaomi HyperOS operating system
Since the MIUI graphical interface was replaced by the new HyperOS system, we can also find it in the Xiaomi 14. The design is, of course, quite similar to the MIUI 14, as we already mentioned in the review on POCO X6Pro.
The font style has changed slightly, the control center has also received a new design, and the icons of individual items in the settings have changed. If we talk about the overall functionality, it is at a good level and we did not notice any major problems.
However, we were not pleased with the number of unnecessary applications that are pre-installed in the system. These are applications such as Netflix, Xiaomi Community, LinkedIn or TikTok. Personally, we are more in favor of everyone installing only those applications that they need and use. All mentioned can be uninstalled.
In the settings, we can find a fairly large number of different system customizations. There is also an active viewing function, which keeps the display active as long as the smartphone registers that we are looking at the display or wake up by lifting or double tapping.
The system also allows heart rate measurement using a fingerprint sensor, a permanent always-on display or hiding the cutout for the front camera using a black strip.
Xiaomi 14: Final evaluation
The latest flagship series is represented by the first of its models, the latest Xiaomi 14. We were particularly impressed by its compact dimensions, which are no longer commonplace these days, by its successful design and high-quality cameras and hardware.
In this case, it is difficult for us to find negatives. It is a very well-balanced smartphone that has a great AMOLED display, top-notch hardware and excellent cameras. Whether it's a main, wide-angle or telescoping camera, each of them offers quality output.
There is also support for the latest WiFi standard in version 7, NFC and wireless charging. A minor negative is perhaps only noticeable heating of the smartphone under heavy load.
