Lei Jun on compact smartphones: "There is no market for such smartphones anymore, the sales will not even cover our costs"

Compact smartphones have apparently died out

Xiaomi profiles itself as having a really rich portfolio of smartphones. It has different sizes, equipment, colors, but also different price ranges.

If we look at specific smartphones, none of them are downright small and compact. The closest thing to it is basic Xiaomi 13, but when we put it next to the iPhone 13 mini, we can see that Xiaomi is not completely compact.

There is a certain small section of users who blame the Chinese giant for the absence of compact smartphones. It could also be said that this segment has practically died out and there is nothing to be surprised about.

Lei Jun sees no potential in them

The CEO of Xiaomi, lei Jun, said more about this issue on the Chinese social network Weibo. After the failure of the iPhone 13 mini, Xiaomi decided not to produce compact smartphones.

The reason is also that only a certain part of the population will buy them, while their low sales would not even reach the development and production costs, which is definitely bad.

In addition, Lei Jun claims that with such a compact size, a smaller smartphone could not accommodate the same functions as current models, resulting in a poorer camera and shorter battery life, areas that customers pay very high attention to.

In any case, we cannot expect compact smartphones from the Chinese giant in the coming years. However, some models are doing well, led by Xiaomi 13 and Samsung Galaxy S23. We will probably never get to the level of mini iPhones again.
