Every flagship already has extremely high quality cameras today, so it is very difficult to compare which smartphone took a better photo. The manufacturers are therefore trying to differentiate themselves with other functions, and Xiaomi is planning something similar.
Apple, Google and OPPO already offer special features, but Xiaomi wants to impress with night sky photos. Beijing-based Xiaomi Software Corporation has obtained a patent in its home country for its automatic camera software called time-lapse photography of the stars of the night sky.
Time-lapse video of the night sky
The Xiaomi patent describes in detail the software algorithm of the camera behind the time-lapse shooting mode with stars. When the user activates the "Star Trails" mode in the camera application, the camera automatically focuses on the night sky and determines the most appropriate settings, such as ISO and white balance.
The smartphone must then remain in the same position throughout the recording in order to photograph the night sky between each successive time interval of the stars.
The algorithm then stores these photos to interpret the data using artificial intelligence. Using them, the algorithm then combines all the photos of a short time-lapse video that shows the shift of the stars in the night sky.
Alternatively, users can use the algorithm for other types of stellar video, such as video of swirling stars in the night sky.
Premiere at Xiaomi 12 Ultra?
As the patent has only recently been published, we expect Xiaomi to soon officially introduce the new Star Trails mode in its next flagship, which will focus on camera quality.
Yes, we mean the model Xiaomi 12Ultra, which is said to be unveiled next month in China with a Leica-tuned camera and a hitherto unannounced Qualap.
