Virtual RAM is a relatively new feature that has already appeared in some powerful smartphones. It will be distributed in bulk together with the MIUI 13 system, but selected Xiaomi smartphones already have it and in today's article we will show you how this function works.
Virtual RAM
In the past, we could have encountered this concept not only with available, but also with really powerful devices. The key to this feature is RAM expansion through fast internal storage.
Cheaper smartphones benefit from faster operation and the more expensive ones subsequently offer more functions within multitasking (working with several applications at the same time). However, it is important to mention that these extra gigabytes RAM are not primarily designed to increase performance in mobile games.
From a technological point of view, such a fast storage, such as UFS 3.o resp. UFS 3.1, can add - not substitute - physical RAM. In return, it removes a certain amount of storage (for example, if we add 12 GB of fast storage to 3 GB of RAM - the resulting operational memory, which is available, is up to 15 GB).
How does it work ?
If, after the previous chapter, you can at least imagine what this function means to you, we will now explain how it actually works. In practice, mobile and virtual RAM are similar to RAM disk or disk swap file. Operating systems also use this technology. However, in our mobile phones, as mentioned above, virtual RAM is dependent on fast storage.
The overall performance of a smartphone after unpacking it is one thing. However, its smooth operation during full use and after activating this function is already the second. Let's skip the game mode and focus on when you could use this feature as well.
The main improvement when using a smartphone, for example, is the rotation of applications after they are reopened. The smartphone should not put these applications to sleep too quickly (it would require reloading them) and you can continue to work faster in the application. The same situation can occur when browsing websites.
The browser won't have to reload the web, which will ultimately save you data. However, it is definitely not a full-fledged replacement for physical RAM, which will, of course, be at a higher level of performance.
Redmi Note 10 Pro 5G and MIX 4: The function is active
According to the well - known Twitter account with the nickname @kacskrz, Xiaomi is already bringing virtual RAM for Redmi Note 10 Pro 5G (CN version). It was this smartphone that has already offered its users the option to turn on this feature through settings. You can find it in the Slovak language under the name "RAM expansion".
However, the service will not be available for every smartphone. According to a report from the gizpie.com portal, the manufacturer has decided to make the function available with the 128/256 GB Chinese version of Note 10 Pro 5G, an expansion of 2,00 GB of RAM is available via fast UFS storage.
We have already noticed the novelty in the editorial office, specifically on the new smartphone Xiaomi MIX 4, which we have in the original Chinese version. As you can see in the picture above, according to the data in the smartphone settings, we can virtually expand the RAM by 3,00 GB.
Will your smartphone get virtual RAM?
For other smartphones, the new virtual RAM expansion feature should arrive as part of the MIUI 13 software update. Global versions should also be available, and we already know a list of selected models that will support the expansion. The information was published by Kacper Skrzypek via the social network Twitter.
Xiaomi added this feature officially to RN10Pro CN at first (a few weeks ago). Today it arrived in beta at Snapdragon 888/870/865 devices, including Mi 11/Pro/Ultra, Mi 10/Pro/Ultra, POCO F3, Mi 11i. Mi Mix Fold didn't receive that option (I think due to MIUI 12 base, not 12.5).

In addition to the aforementioned pair, new Xiaomi devices should of course include this feature. During the day, however, the feature has also appeared in beta versions of devices with processors Snapdragon 888/870/865, including Xiaomi Mi 11 / Pro / Ultra, Mi 11i, Mi 10 / Pro / Ultra, but also POCO F3. In this case, however, we do not know the size by which the RAM can be expanded.
However, the value of the extension varies individually by device, activation within the beta version Redmi Notes 8 for example, it offers an expansion of 1,00 GB. From other models, this feature also appeared with the available Redmi 9, Redmi Notes 9 5G a Redmi Notes 9T. We don't know the size of the extension in this case either. Surprisingly, the novelty is not supported by the Mi MIX Fold, the flagship smartphone is still limited to the MIUI 12 system.
RN9 5G/Redmi Note 9T got it as well.

Is it like a fixed tax for each model? How not to choose 1-2-3 GB, but firmly by 3 GB?
Why isn't there a choice?
Total liberation from freedom and democracy and alternative views and free speech and the possibility to choose - all this is still in vogue today in the western world…
Ahaaaaa, Xiaomi, Redmi etc. are not devices from the western world, that's why 🙂
