In 2019, we saw an exponential increase in the resolution of smartphone cameras. From the average of 12 MPx to 16 MPx to 48 MPx until then, and today we already know that the increase did not end with this resolution.
Megapixels will increase
In a few months there was another increase in resolution thanks to the sensor Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1. It brought a resolution of up to 64 MPx and was the first to be equipped with a smartphone Redmi Note 8 Pro.
Enthusiasm for the increase in megapixels continued and the year ended with Xiaomi CC9 Pro / Xiaomi Mi Note 10. This smartphone came with the largest sensor to date, which, in addition to size, also had the highest resolution among smartphones.
Sensor Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX brought up to 108 MPx.
But now a message is coming from China saying that even 108 MPx is not enough. Let's talk about a smartphone with 256 MPx camera. Exaggerated? Maybe not with Xiaomi. It's all based on a screenshot taken in the Camera app. Obviously, this is a Xiaomi smartphone, as you are on the Xiaomi Planet website.
The created screenshot also suggests that it is an MIUI interface, but in the Chinese version. This report comes from a relatively credible source in China, so we believe that there may be something real behind this leak.
However, there is currently no image sensor manufacturer that has a product with a physical resolution of 256 MPx. We mean the most professional manufacturers, such as Sony and Samsung. However, it is quite possible that these companies are engaged in development during this period, which is also focused on a larger number of pixels.
256 software megapixels are real today
However, there is an alternative and that is a software modification, thanks to which it would be possible to achieve such a high resolution even with today's sensors. For example, the recently introduced sensor from Sony - 64 megapixel Sony IMX 686 Exmor RS CMOSwhich we find in the latest Redmi K30 5G.
After a digital quadruple expansion, it can reach a resolution of 256 MPx, as the calculation already suggests that 64 x 4 equals 256. If the screenshot is real, then the near future will show us the truth.
If we have new information about the 256 MPx Xiaomi smartphone, we will send you info by e-mail. ?
